Many people think that earwax is "dirty" and needs to be scrubbed away. However, your ears are actually designed to clean themselves. Using cotton buds (Q-tips) or pouring oil into your ears can cause more problems than it solves.

Even though they look soft, cotton buds are not meant to go inside your ear canal.

• They push wax deeper: Think of your ear canal like a narrow tube. When you stick a bud in, you might get a little wax out, but you are mostly pushing the rest of it deep against your eardrum. This creates a hard "plug" that can make it hard to hear.

• They can cause injury: The skin inside your ear is very thin. One slip or a sudden move can scratch the ear or even poke a hole in your eardrum, which is extremely painful and can damage your hearing.

Some people use olive oil or baby oil to try and melt earwax. While doctors sometimes use special drops, doing it yourself can be risky.

• It can trap germs: Adding oil to your ear creates a warm, wet place where bacteria love to grow. This can lead to a painful ear infection.

• It makes a mess: Without the right tools to wash the oil back out, it often just mixes with the wax to create a "muddy" blockage that makes your hearing feel muffled.

• The "Hidden Hole" risk: If you have a tiny hole in your eardrum that you don't know about, oil can leak into the inner parts of your ear and cause serious damage.

The best way to take care of your ears is to leave the inside alone.

1. Wipe the outside: After a shower, just use a damp washcloth to wipe the outer part of the ear that you can see.

2. Let your jaw do the work: When you talk, chew, or yawn, your jaw naturally moves old wax out of the ear canal. It will eventually just fall out on its own.

3. Dry gently: If your ears feel wet after swimming or bathing, just tilt your head and pat the outside dry with a towel
